At LILY DE MAI we talk a lot about Skin Identical Ingredients. These special ingredients are the most important in keeping sensitive skin healthy, functioning optimally and looking its best. To understand how important Skin Identical Ingredients are too sensitive skin health, we need to talk briefly about the Barrier Function.
The Barrier Function is a water-resistant, antibacterial, protective “shield “ on the top layer of our skin. It protects skin from bacteria, allergens, pollution, UV exposure, extreme climate conditions and other environmental stressors and pathogens. The Barrier Function is also crucial in maintaining skin hydration by limiting dehydration and water loss in skin cells.
When the Barrier Function is depleted or damaged, skin can become dry, dehydrated, flaky, itchy, and prone to redness, sensitivity, and eczema. A solid, strong Barrier Function greatly minimizes the chance of skin having an inflammatory response to environmental conditions, pathogens and irritants.
Two of the most important components of a healthy Barrier Function and optimum skin cell functioning are Skin Lipids and Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF).
Skin Lipids are oily, fatty or waxy substances. They are composed of:
- free fatty acids
- wax esters
Natural Moisturizing Factor is composed of:
- free amino acids
- lactic acid
- inorganic salts including chlorides, phosphates, and citrates of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
Skin needs optimum amounts of Lipids and NMF to function properly and look its best. It follows that the most effective and beneficial skin care ingredients would be the ones that are most identical to the components occurring naturally in our skin. These are Skin Identical Ingredients. Ingredients that mimic the components of healthy skin and help to restore, strengthen and support our Barrier Function.
At LILY DE MAI, we use Skin Identical Ingredients in all of our products to nourish and revitalize skin with ingredients it recognizes and needs. Including
- Ceramide 3
- Pomegranate Sterols (cholesterol)

Skin Identical Ingredients skin work in harmony with our skin and its natural process of balance and rejuvenation, helping our skin to help itself. And that’s a beautiful thing!
