You may be committed to choosing the right products and following the best skin care rituals but some daily lifestyle habits could be wreaking havoc on your skin. Here are five ways you might be harming your skin - and fixes for a radiant and healthy complexion.
1) Sleeping on a Dirty Pillowcase
Skin cells regenerate and repair most effectively at night. While a full night of sleep can benefit the overall health of the skin, resting your head on an unclean pillow undoes that good work. Pillowcases hold onto dirt, oil, bacteria, and pollution from dirty skin and hair which can lead to acne flare-ups. “When your pillowcase isn’t laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt and oil is transferred back to your skin,” board-certified dermatologist David E. Bank, MD, tells The Huffington Post.
The Fix: Change your pillowcase at least once or twice a week. Launder them with a dye and fragrance-free detergent, preferably natural and always cleanse your face before bed. Try our RENEW Restorative | Calming Cream Cleanser. Formulated with Organic Argan and Avacado Oils, Shea Butter and super hydrating Panthenol and Hyaluronic Acid. Soap and surfactant-free, non-drying, thoroughly effective and supremely gentle.
2) Not Washing Your Makeup Brushes Enough
It’s a tedious task that even the most enthusiastic beauty lover would rather overlook: cleaning makeup brushes. But the handles and bristles can hold onto pollution, dirt, and oil that cause blemishes, irritation, and dull-looking skin. “Skin oils can build up over several months’ time, and if the brushes are kept in the bathroom close to the toilet, they can harbor some nasty bacteria,” dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, explained to Redbook Magazine. Clean brushes are also more effective at applying and blending makeup.
The Fix: Clean brushes 1-3 times per month depending on how often you use them. Use a gentle soap or shampoo and lie flat to air dry. While you are cleaning your brushes treat your skin to a deep gentle detox with our PURITY Marine | Mineral Detox Mask. Three organic seaweeds deeply moisturize dry skin. Dead Sea Salt essential minerals, re-mineralize and enhance skin tone. Kaolin and Sea Clay gently exfoliate, absorb toxins and balance oil production. The result is deeply purified refreshed and radiant skin.
After a long day, sometimes all you want is a nice, hot shower. Though the warm water might feel blissful, it can strip the skin of natural oils and overstimulate skin. That causes excessive dryness not to mention itchiness, redness and enlarged capillaries. It can also exasperate existing skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. “Long, hot showers compromise the innate barrier function of the skin by depleting natural oils from the skin surface,” board-certified dermatologist Jessica Weiser shared with StyleCaster.
The Fix: Keep your skin healthy and hydrated by lowering the temperature. If you absolutely must take a hot shower, limit it to a few minutes and apply a body oil as soon as you step out—while skin is still damp. Our HARMONY Omega 3|6 Body Serums are perfect for locking in precious moisture and deeply hydrating skin with organic Shiso, Argan, Watermelon and Sesame Oils.
Cell phones, glasses, and headphones are necessary parts of life but they can harbor bacteria, viruses, dirt and pollution from our fingers, face, hair and environment resulting in acne, inflammation and even skin infections.
The Fix: Use single-use organic cotton esthetic 4x4 pads instead of washcloths. Clean your Clarisonic brush head after every use with warm soapy water. Air dry and spritz with alcohol to disinfect.
5) Wash Cloths and Skin Brushes
We love our Clarisonic but the brush head that deeply cleanses our skin can harbor mold, skin debris and bacteria if not cleaned and disinfected regularly.
The Fix: Use one-time use organic cotton esthetic 4x4 pads instead of washcloths. Clean your Clarisonic brush head after every use with warm soapy water. Air dry and spritz with alcohol to disinfect.
